HOLIDAYS by the T’ai Chi
Foundation (TCF) attract people of all ages, from all walks of life, and
from all over the world. The TCF is an international not-for-profit
school with more than 200 teachers. Many of these teachers will be
present to teach students T’ai Chi and meditation, from beginning to
advanced levels, while working together to improve their own skills.
We will hold the 2009 T’ai Chi summer
holiday in Radley College, a public school for boys on the edge of the village
of Radley, about five miles south of Oxford, England. Its 800-acre campus, which
includes playing fields, a golf course, lake and farmland, provides a beautiful
environment for learning T’ai Chi. Guests may also venture to nearby Oxford, the
‘city of dreaming spires’, to visit one of the oldest universities in the
English-speaking world.
We will again offer the popular Roots &
Branchesã course, which condenses T’ai Chi practice to its essence, is energetic
and deeply healing. Intensely affecting us both inside and out, the movements
and postures generate vital energy (chi) and give us an experience of stillness
and relaxation.
There is plenty of time to enjoy a drink
with new friends and/or take part in the evening programmes. The holiday week
finishes with a special last-night dinner, theatre and party.
You might also consider arriving early
or staying beyond the week (though staying outside Radley) to fully explore
Oxford’s world-famous attractions.
Kids love ‘Kids’ Camp’!
While parents enjoy their own classes,
children of all ages can enjoy a range of organised activities. Dedicated Kids’
Camp staff will keep children happy, safe and occupied with various activities,
including arts and crafts, excursions and free play.
Children from age five, accompanied by a
parent or carer, can participate in T’ai Chi Kids’ GamesSM. Playing
specially developed games, they become familiar with T’ai Chi principles and get
a taste of the T’ai Chi Form. Teens can participate in T’ai Chi classes.
Kids’ Camp gives
parents and carers the freedom to fully participate in classes, while sharing
meals and free time with their children. The relaxed and fun atmosphere of Kids’
Camp adds a special quality to the training as a whole.
A typical day in Radley
Most people will do
three hours of T’ai Chi per day, consisting of one hour of Roots & Branches and
two hours of Form or Push Hands, depending on their needs and preferences.
Before lunch everyone can join an hour of guided meditations.
Around these hours you can pick and
choose from activities such as pre-breakfast T’ai Chi rounds, PsychocalisthenicsR,
Nine Ways of ZhikrSM, Hawaiian swimming and various evening
programmes. Aside from the swimming, there is no additional cost for these
courses.
T’ai Chi Chuan
T’ai Chi is an ancient Chinese art that
promotes total health: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. A ‘round’ of
T’ai Chi takes only 7-10 minutes to perform. No special equipment or clothing is
required. The TCF teaches the Yang Style Short Form in the tradition of the late
Grandmaster Cheng Man-Ch’ing. The TCF’s unique team-teaching method has
attracted and inspired many students through the years.
Roots & Branches: Generating Chi
Developed by Professor Cheng
Man-Ch’ing, Roots & Branches represents the essence of T’ai Chi Chuan. The
movements and postures of this form of ‘Chi Kung’ have the power to deeply
address and change illness, restoring us to health and preventing illness. It is
based on Yin and Yang and the elements of nature (wood, fire, earth, metal and
water). Practicing Roots & Branches will generate more life force within us, and
through its meditative quality will give us an experience of stillness and
relaxation.
The course includes moves that generate
Chi, circulate and unblock Chi, apply the Chi to nourish the system, and return
the Chi to the deepest level – that of Jing Chi, associated from time immemorial
with health, spirit and longevity. We will also consider how to utilise the
application of Chi for ourselves or others. By the end of the week you will be
able to practise Roots & Branches on your own, to support your wellbeing and
health for the rest of your life!
Each day will start
with an hour of this course, and can be attended by anyone, whether or not they
have any previous experience of T’ai Chi.
T’ai Chi Form for beginners
The sequence of moves is taught
step-by-step by highly experienced instructors teaching in teams. Each class
includes group instruction with clear indications, demonstrations, practice and
hands-on help with positions and moves.
Advanced T’ai Chi programme
The intensive residential format allows
participants, learning on whichever level, to immerse in T’ai Chi and experience
deeper levels of awareness. In this way, the knowledge of the art and its
meaning in daily life are enriched. Advanced students can do Form and/or Push
Hands ‘workshop-style’, led by senior teachers.
Traditional Hawaiian SwimmingSM
This original swimming technique used by
the Hawaiian warriors from the Huna tradition uses T’ai Chi principles of
timing, balance and relaxation. It is a refreshing complement to the intensive
T’ai Chi programme and is a wonderful opportunity to overcome hydrophobia. We
will offer classes for children and adults.
T’ai Chi and Meditation
In our school, T’ai Chi practice and
meditation go hand in hand. This union recognises that relaxation is not just
about the body but also about the mind and the spirit. The self-development and
spiritual work complements and accelerates the process of relaxation and has
always been part of the TCF’s T’ai Chi tradition.
The types of meditation mentioned below
come from the Arica School.
The Arica School®
The
Arica School was founded by Oscar Ichazo in 1968 as a School of Knowledge. It
provides a contemporary method of enlightenment, employing modern knowledge to
clarify human consciousness, producing freedom and liberation.
Psychocalisthenics
training by Oscar Ichazo
Psychocalisthenics is a sequence of 23 movement and breathing exercises that
activate the flow of vital energy through all muscle groups, organs, glands and
tissues. A great way to wake up
physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.
The Arica Nine Ways of Zhikr training by Oscar Ichazo
In the Arica Zhikr, the internal mantram
of the Divine, ‘Toham Kum Rah
SM’, is repeated in
nine different ways to specific patterns of music, movements and breathing to
produce the State of mystical ecstasy and union with the Divine.
The Nine Hypergnostic Systems TrainingSM
Friday 17 July to
Saturday 1 August 2009
As an alternative
to the T’ai Chi holiday programme, consider taking time out and treating
yourself to the transforming experience of The Nine Hypergnostic Systems
Training.
This intensive Arica
programme gives you the opportunity to acquire a solid and enduring foundation
for self-knowledge and spiritual insight.
Tai Chi Chuan
Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese art that promotes
total health: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. A
"round" of Tai Chi takes only 7-10 minutes. No special
equipment or clothing is required. We teach the Yang Style
Short Form in the tradition of the late Grandmaster Cheng Man-Ch'ing.
TCF/STCC's unique team-teaching method has attracted and inspired
many students through the years.
