What Is a Wellness Vacation?
For most Americans, typical vacations offer an escape from the fatiguing cycle of our workdays and weekend obligations. However, they don’t do anything to change our daily realities when they are over. Wellness vacations, sometimes called wellness retreats, are guided trips that provide tools and strategies for handling stress in your everyday life. They may include eating healthy foods and exploring relaxation techniques, meditation, yoga, or Tai Chi.
Why You Need a Wellness Vacation
As of 2022, most people have all too many reasons to take a wellness retreat to manage stress. Just a few of them include:
- Two years of a pandemic… and counting. As of May 2022, one million Americans had died of COVID-19, and their family and friends will struggle with this loss for years to come. Others have had to cope with illness, long durations of being apart from loved ones, or strained family relations due to pandemic-related politics.
- Rising inflation. 87% of Americans surveyed by the American Psychological Association (APA) reported feeling anxiety about the high cost of necessities during current record-breaking inflation. Although taking a wellness vacation is not exempt from such costs, it can be a worthwhile investment for people who need coping strategies for this and other sources of worry.
- Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. 80% of Americans report feeling stressed about the Russian invasion of Ukraine, although naturally, those directly affected by the attacks are under the most stress. American anxiety stems not only from general horror and empathy on behalf of Ukrainians, but concern over potential Russian retaliation against the US and the western world in the form of cyber-attacks, infrastructure attacks, or nuclear war.
- Prolonged periods of stress overall. Many people are feeling the general strain of a long period of major and unusual crises with no end in sight.
Wellness vacations can be especially useful during times of prolonged stress. They offer not only a change in scenery and a chance to catch your breath but also opportunities for making permanent positive changes in your physical and mental health. You can get the most bang for your buck by doing activities that combine these. As a martial art form that synthesizes meditation and movement, Tai Chi is arguably one of the most effective wellness practices you can learn.
